Sherman explains that his musical kinship with Barron was sparked when the pianist reached out to him about giving his granddaughter vibraphone lessons. And from there, we just became friends. The two would later play a weekend of duets at Kitano in Manhattan, followed by a few select gigs that allowed them to forge a deeper chemistry together. It was fun and a privilege for me, of course, says Sherman. Sherman spearheaded the project, wanting to record the music while it was alive. The resulting collaboration is undoubtedly filled with life.

“We both laughed and cried when we listened to the tapes to choose the music for the album. There’s some nostalgia in it. It’s a souvenir and a documentation of some of what Alex Riel and I have had together,” says Stefan Pasborg.
Alex Riel (born 1940) is the literal Godfather of Stefan Pasborg (born 1974). Their shared history is rich, having developed a close musical and personal friendship together over many years. Alex Riel was a teacher to the young Stefan, and since then they’ve become peers. In 2017, they received one of the most prestigious honors in Danish music, the Gudman Prize – together, as co-winners.
When they first began performing together back in 2006, it was as a duo. The younger musician's powerful drive met the more laid-back energy of the veteran, and despite their differences, the musical connection between the two created a fascinating listening experience for audiences.
For the last decade, the drumming duo has been playing and touring with a larger group. The bigger band was initially formed for a concert at Skuespilhuset in Copenhagen in 2009, and continued to develop over many years and performances, since. This album is a collection of sounds and musical selections from five concerts between 2009 and 2018, an auditory collage with each element carefully chosen and now released for listeners everywhere to enjoy.
Alex Riel has played with pretty much everyone throughout the history of Jazz music in a legendary career that spans decades – along the way, developing and refining his famously original and responsive voice on the drums. He’s a fundamental figure in the Danish jazz story, not only contributing to the music in Denmark, but also playing a vital role in bands with European and American greats as well.
He was performing with some of the latter in the 1960s during his time as the drummer in the house band at the famed Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen. During that period, coryphaei like saxophonists Dexter Gordon and Ben Webster not only passed through the Nordic jazz haven, but were among the iconic American instrumentalists who relocated to the city.
It was also in the 60s that Alex formed the Riel-Mikkelborg quintet (with Danish trumpet luminary Palle Mikkelborg) and established The Savage Rose, a band with the eminent Annisette in front on vocals. When Riel and Pasborg were considering who to invite for their concert in Skuespilhuset in 2009, the older pro suggested Mikkelborg and Annisette, noting that some of his greatest musical experiences had been with them.
Trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg (born 1941) has distinguished himself as an original and innovative artist who perceives music as sacred, spiritual territory in life – while living and loving to challenge musical traditions in both his playing and thinking. Annisette (born 1948) has been a unique and seminal presence in Danish Beat and Rock music, with an unmistakable strength of sound that makes hers one of the most powerful and identifiable voices in the world.
For Stefan Pasborg, playing with Annisette offered inspiration: “It was great to perform with her. Every time she opened her mouth and sang, it was as if she was singing for her life. That was also the case in the rehearsal room before we went on stage. The rest of us could feel that we’d damn well better pull ourselves together. She has primordial power.” Pasborg is a physical and versatile drummer who has chosen own path and honed his own voice and skillset as an important contributing member of the experimental music scene. He has distinguished himself as an excellent instrumentalist who has performed around the globe with Miroslav Vitous, Enrico Pieranunzi, Marc Ducret, Ray Anderson, and Tomasz Stanko, as well as Danes John Tchicai, Carsten Dahl, Dawda Jobarteh, Oh Land, and many others. He has received numerous awards for his music and musicianship, which has been called both God-fearing and world-class, or as American Hammondbeat put it: ‘To anyone who appreciates drums and percussion at ist best, listen carefully to Stefan's work and be amazed.’
Pasborg is also an energetic project creator and inspired entrepreneur with connections to the ILK Music collective and ensembles like Ibrahim Electric, Odessa XL, Firebirds, Magic Spirit Quartet, and Free Moby Dick. He’s also played countless solo concerts in Denmark and abroad.
For his contribution to the concert back in 2009, he looked to his musical partners in Ibrahim Electric – a high-spirited trio with members who have achieved a synergy and mutual joy of playing through two decades of stage and studio experience together. In addition to Pasborg, the band features Niclas Knudsen on guitar and Jeppe Tuxen on hammond organ. The inclusion of the organ in the newly created Riel/Pasborg group was also a nod to Alex’s history with the instrument in The Savage Rose.
This album, ALEX RIEL & STEFAN PASBORG UNIVERSE LIVE, features Palle Mikkelborg and Annisette, as well as Thomas Vang on bass, Dan Hemmer on organ, Marilyn Mazur and Birgit Løkke on percussion, and Dawda Jobarteh on kora. The music unfolds itself into the far corners of the Universe they’ve created in a repertoire that includes free improvisations, intense grooves, and arrangements that explore material written by Palle Mikkelborg, Charles Mingus, Thomas Koppel, and Charlie Chaplin, among others.
For this project, Alex Riel and Stefan Pasborg tuned their drums so that the sounds and pitches from each kit wouldn’t interfere with the other. Stefan’s drum set is tuned lower and deeper than Alex’s, or in other words: Pasborg’s drums sound more rock-like, and Riel’s more jazz-like. This helps allow listeners distinguish one from the other, for additional layers and levels of enjoyment.

Das "Signoricci"-System, so sein Spitzname in der audiophilen Welt, funktioniert nicht mit Stützmikrofonen, die die einzelnen Instrumente wie unter einer Lupe vergrößern, sondern mit seinen geliebten Neumann-Röhrenmikrofonen, die er selbst so positioniert, dass ein natürliches Schallfeld erzeugt wird.
All dies ist bei dieser Aufnahme so gut gelungen, dass man das Gefühl hat, an einem Live-Konzert teilzunehmen. Die Musiker positionieren sich auf einer imaginären Bühne und halten dabei einen gewissen Abstand zum Zuhörer ein. Die Lautsprecher scheinen zu verschwinden. Es dauert einen Moment, bis man sich an diese, im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Aufnahmen, relativ schlechte Wirkung gewöhnt hat. Aber man muss nicht lange warten, bis man den Charme der Aufnahme entdeckt, einen Charme, der einen lebendigen Klangkosmos schafft und der dem Ganzen Bedeutung beimisst, anstatt die Instrumente klar voneinander zu trennen. Auch der Klang des Saxophons ist, obwohl entschieden, immer samtweich und neigt nie dazu, zu laut zu sein. Die Lautstärke steigt spontan, stört aber nicht und ist nicht aufdringlich.
Dieses Album wird viele Hörer musikalisch und klanglich glücklich machen.
Wie angekündigt war für die Ballade ein ruhiges Tempo vorgesehen und keine schnellen Rhythmen oder hohen Töne.
Hamiltons Klänge sind ordentlich, leise und seine Begleiter folgen ihm mit Ausnahme einiger kleiner Soli diskret. So verbreiten Standards wie "Moon River", "All Or Nothing" oder "The Shadow Of Your Smile" eine entspannte Clubatmosphäre.

The only real surprise at this stage in Yelena Eckemoff’s unique, super-prolific career would be if the Russian-born pianist-composer made new music that didn’t surprise.
But even by that standard, Yelena Eckemoff’s double album, Better Than Gold and Silver, on which she sets biblical psalms to music, is an amazement: Each disc of Better Than Gold and Silver consists of ten selections, presented in identical order. The first disc features Eckemoff with vocalists, the second disc consists of instrumental versions by the same ensemble, different takes with longer solos in which the vocal lines are given to the various instruments. The gorgeous clarion tone of Alessi’s trumpet spreads joy through a “songs without words” approach. Floating on Eckemoff’s glistening lyricism at the piano, which draws from her classical training as well as jazz, blues, gospel, and pop, the music is remarkably open and lit from within, seemingly inspired by Psalm 119: Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Though Eckemoff has long played religious music in church, she says: My musical settings of the Biblical Psalms do not belong to the oeuvre of Christian music. It is rather a work of modern jazz.

The Focusyear Band 21 presents itself extremely international: The singer Tatjana Nova grew up in Moscow and came to Dresden at the age of 19. Bassist Ethan Cohn is from New Yorke who graduated from Montreal - and Áron Tálas from Hungary he is as well a drummer and pianist.
Each year, the ensemble is reassembled from a large number of international applications. Focusyear Band 21 has very quickly found its own sound and is characterized by a high level of sound awareness and a willingness to take risks and improvise. After many intensive weeks with prominent coaches, the eight young musicians now present a selection of their own compositions that were created during the year.
On BOSQUE we hear a finely differentiated, homogeneous ensemble with great soloists. After two critically acclaimed albums, DEUS EX MACHINA and DARK WAVE, the French Bigband Initiative H is releasing a third opus; BROKEN LAND, modeled on Grieg's "Peer Gynt Suite" or Moussorgsky's "Pictures of an Exhibition".
The origin of this album is tied to a climatological study. In this, it is assumed that we have reached the "climatic point of no return" since 3rd August 2017.
BROKEN LAND embodies the sound and visual soundtrack of this dark assessment; a sombre and imposing, but also fragile and intimate piece of music that allows the listener to glide into an imaginary road movie.
Far from fatalism, this album also creates a consciousness that conveys hope; to fight and not give up. BROKEN LAND provides a new impetus - strong, sensitive and bright all at the same time.
Founded in 2012 by David Haudrechy, Initiative H took the ambitious challenge to create a dense, modern and passionate music transcending the genres jazz, rock, electro and 20th century music. The powerful sound of this 21st century orchestra is fed by the energy of a big collective project where each musician has its certain place. The interpretation is masterly, the engagement absolute and the listener will be completely absorbed by the telling power of this music. A musical adventure, human, urban, which makes Initiative H an unavoidable entity of the renovation of the French jazz scene.
Considering his passion for surfing, snowboarding and skating, the genre crossover in saxophonist David Haudrechyʼs music is more than understandable. The thrill, the shiver, the risk, all sensations are also part of the iconic picture of „Dark Wave“, under the direction and composition of David Haudrechy. He developed his own, liberate, musical language as much inspired by Berlioz and Moussorgski as by Gill Evans, Carla Bley, but also King Crimson and Arvo Pärt. Unexpected and paradox like in a slalom is the musical process between the different projects surrounding the band.

Impressions On Chopin’s Nocturnes nutzt 21 dieser Nocturnes als Ausgangsbasis für typische Loussier-Improvisationen, die wie immer Jazz und Klassik als gleichberechtigte Partner nebeneinander existieren lassen. Jacques Loussier: „Ich spiele zwar nicht genau was er geschrieben hat, aber wenn man Chopins Musik kennt, kann man meinen Ausgangspunkt erkennen. Einige dieser Stücke bedurften einer ganzen Menge an Vorbereitungen, andere dagegen waren mehr oder minder auf der Stelleentstandene, spontane Kreationen. Ich habe verschiedene Arrangements ausprobiert - was als Solist natürlich viel einfacher ist, als wenn man mit Bass und Schlagzeug arbeitet.“ Das Ergebnis sind großartige 21 Klangperlen, in denen mal impressionistische Harmonien, dann wieder aus der Gospelmusik entlehnte Elemente aufblitzen. Sicher, Christian McBride hätte sein neues akkordloses Ensemble – bestehend aus Trompete, Saxophon, Bass und Schlagzeug - das Christian McBride Quartett oder die Christian McBride Group nennen können. Doch er entschloss sich für Jawn (eine Umgangssprache aus Philadelphia), was ein Allzweckbegriff für eine Person, einen Ort oder eine Sache ist.
Christian McBride war auf der Suche nach einer neuen Herausforderung. Als Musiker bekommt man nicht allzu oft die Chance, in einer akkordlosen Gruppe zu spielen. Jeder größeren Formation, der er in den letzten zehn Jahren angehörte, ob Pat Metheny oder Chick Corea oder seine eigenen Projekte: es gab nichts als Akkorde. Also war seine Neugier groß, was passiert, wenn die Akkorde ganz rausgezogen werden.
