"A very thin wire", das neueste und vierte Werk des heute 55-jährigen Amerikaners veröffentlicht Produzent und Labelchef Günter Pauler wieder als hochwertige SACD.
Die Aufnahmen sind sauber und differenziert, enthalten ein Maximum an Dynamik und eine Auflösung, die auch noch so feine Klangdetails exakt herausarbeitet. Die dunkle, facettenreiche Stimme steht stets im Zentrum des Geschehens, ohne dabei die Instrumente in den Hintergrund zu drängen. Keine Frage, dass Steve Strauss und das Team von Stockfisch Records mit "A very thin wire" eine weitere audiophile Perle geschaffen haben.
Günter Pauler zeigt hier wieder einmal aufs Vortrefflichste, wie durch ausgeklügeltes Sounddesign der ganz spezielle Charakter verschiedener Lieder individuell ausgeleuchtet werden kann. Musikalisch zeigt sich Strauss, kongenial begleitet von Saitenvirtuose und Multiinstrumentalist Ian Melrose, als klassischer Singer/Songwriter und lässt in seinen Songs tiefe Einblicke in sein Gefühls- und Seelenleben zu.
Die Instrumentierung fällt ebenfalls sehr gelungen aus und es kommen neben der Hammond B3-Orgel z.B. noch Bass, Schlagzeug/Percussion und Saxophon zum Einsatz, die u.a. von so bekannten Musikern wie Beo Brockhausen, Lars Hansen und Heinz Lichius bedient werden.
Munter beschwingt startet das Album mit "Somebody tell me", um uns gleich darauf melancholisch, nachdenklich "Blue" zu stimmen – ein berührendes Lied in dem Steve Strauss seine jahrelangen Erfahrungen als Psychotherapeut mit Kindern und Jugendlichen verarbeitet hat. Die schlimmen Überflutungen seiner Heimatstadt Binghamton hat er mit dem Song "In the flood" mitfühlend aufgearbeitet. Neben den elf wunderschönen Eigenkompositionen sticht diesmal auch wieder eine sehr gelungene Coverversion hervor. War es auf einem seiner letzten Alben die bewegende Springsteen Nummer "Youngstown", so ist es nun "The heart of Saturday Night" von Altmeister Tom Waits, das sich Steve Strauss gekonnt zu eigen macht.
Dreizehn Songperlen sind das Endergebnis. Ein abwechslungsreiches Album in bester Songwriter Tradition, zum Zuhören, zurücklehnen, entspannen und genießen – ein glasklarer Klang zum dahinschmelzen und niederknien.

Als mir das Band dieser Produktion nach langer Zeit in die Hände fiel, erinnerte ich mich daran, wie ich Chris Jones kennengelernt habe. Es war Charlie Carr, der in einem Army-Shop in Süddeutschland arbeitete und mir, eine für die damalige Zeit sensationelle Endstufe (Crown DC-300), beschafft hat. Als Dank bot ich ihm eine Aufnahme in unserem Studio an. Charlie erschien mit Chris Jones, der ihn bei dieser Aufnahme begleiten sollte. Das war der Anfang einer genialen musikalischen Reise mit Chris Jones.

Wir haben versucht diese Songs so zu interpretieren, dass Erinnerungen bei denen geweckt werden, die sich an die Lieder gerne erinnern und ebenso etwas neues anzubieten, für alle die diese Songs zum ersten Mal hören.
Ich denke, dass alle uns zustimmen werden - „Oldies never die“.

Die Idee, "Win Or Lose" bei Stockfisch Records neu zu veröffentlichen, kam von Günter Pauler, nachdem ich ihm das originale Master-Tape geschickt hatte, das ich in meinem Archiv fand. Ich hatte vermutet, dass es ihn interessieren würde, in erster Linie weil die Klangqualität der originalen Aufnahme so gut war und den Standards der Stockfisch Produktionen entsprach. So haben wir uns entschlossen, das Album als Teil der "Analog Pearls" Serie zu veröffentlichen; sowohl als SACD wie auch als Vinyl LP.
Zur Entstehung der Aufnahme:
Anfang der 80er Jahre wurden die meisten LPs aus Recycled-Vinyl gepresst, infolgedessen litten sie unter hohem Grundgeräusch. Um sicherzustellen, dass die Aufnahme und die Pressung meines Albums von bester Qualität seien, entschied ich mich, mein eigenes Label zu gründen und mich um alles selbst zu kümmern. Ich wollte keine Kompromisse mehr eingehen und hatte mich entschlossen, bei jedem Produktionsschritt des Albums nach Perfektion zu streben. Ich wählte das beste Tonstudio, das beste Cutting-Studio und das beste Presswerk im Vereinigten Königreich aus. Als ich mich bei Nimbus wegen der Pressung meines Albums meldete, bekam ich die Antwort, dass sie nur klassische Musik-LPs pressen würden. Darauf erwiderte ich, sie sollten einen Preis nennen und ich würde ihn bezahlen. Infolgedessen war meine LP die erste nicht klassische Musik-Schallplatte, die von Nimbus gepresst wurde.
Das Album haben wir zwischen dem 7.-13. September 1984 aufgenommen und gemischt. Die meisten Spuren wurden "live" aufgenommen; nur die Harmony-Vocals und einige Keyboard-Overdubs wurden hinterher eingefügt.
Diese Aufnahme entstand vor fast 40 Jahren und obwohl sich im Bereich Aufnahmetechnik und Equipment vieles geändert hat, hoffe ich, dass meine Lieder auch in der heutigen Zeit ihren Wert behalten und Sie das Album genießen werden.

It is said that a change is as good as a rest, and for Katie Doherty it is both a rest, and a change, that provide the backdrop to her latest album And Then. Back in 2007, Doherty became an award-winning songwriter and released her debut solo album Bridges to much acclaim - including airplay from BBC Radio 2 - leading her to share stages with the likes of Karine Polwart, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, and Ray Davies. Life however - as it has a habit of doing - got in the way, putting the brakes for the moment on a soaring trajectory. New roles as composer for many Northern Stage productions, as well as MD for a Royal Shakespeare Company production may have slowed her output, but they have also broadened her knowledge and love for music.
It perhaps should not be a huge surprise then that much of Doherty’s new album is rooted in her keen observation of the concept of change. Whether the focus be on the changing seasons, life circumstances, the passage of time, or the shifting of social attitudes and behaviour, on And Then we see Doherty shine a light on how it feels to be part of a world that can be hard to keep up with.
Yours immediately lands as a story of leaving a beloved city behind. Rose In Winter conjures imagery of the creeping in of winter, and Tiny Little Shoes explores the rollercoaster of first-time parenthood and the accompanying feelings of overwhelming responsibility. Elsewhere on the record are songs that offer a deep examination of wider-world issues, notably the title track, which spotlights societal pressures in the age of social media, as Doherty explains;
“The pressure to live up to expectation and to portray ‘perfect’ is ridiculous and in the age of social media, it's constant, relentless and damaging. I think so much time can get lost in this pursuit and it kills creativity and imagination. I suppose it’s the ultimate procrastination…you don’t get much done when you’re so busy trying to live up to the world’s expectations. I’m not sure at what point in childhood we lose our wild abandon in favour of fitting in, but it’d be great if we all had the ability to revert back once in a while.”
In turn, Angry Daughter is a song about resilience in the face of inequality. Doherty continues;
“During many debates on gender inequality I have heard women sounding almost apologetic about what could be viewed as ‘feminine’ qualities - because we don’t shout the loudest, speak up soon enough…push forward their ideas etc. I wrote this song as an anti-apology, a celebration of the measured, considered and dignified approach to standing your ground, which often gets ignored.”
And Then marks the start of a sparkling new chapter for Katie Doherty.

Teresa Bergman has travelled far. Growing up in Wellington, New Zealand, she arrived in Europe in 2009 to study social sciences in Poland and Germany. During an internship, she fell in love with Berlin and soon became known for her regular gigs in the city’s busking mecca - Mauer Park. “I had to develop a really percussive guitar style just to be heard above the clatter of the street.” Sticking out from the crowd was nothing new, as a child Teresa started playing in front of New Zealand’s shopping malls at nine years old. The singer continues to prove she’s got what it takes to be heard above the noise - influential German radio station, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, recently described her as "the greatest talent we’ve discovered in the past year."
The 32-year-old wrote and recorded her second studio album ‘Apart’ in Berlin and Vienna, co-produced with "Bilderbuch" producer, Sebastian "Zebo" Adam. Her international band: Tobias Kabiersch - bass (GER), Pier Ciaccio - drums (IT) and Matt Paull - keys (NZ), feature extensively on the record. The heart of the production remains however, the wonderfully dynamic voice of Teresa Bergman.
‘Apart’ is less folk inspired than the artist’s first album, with many tracks finding their roots in a darker soul aesthetic, born of Bergman’s heartfelt and often melancholic lyrics. “This album was about honing and tuning my sound”, the singer recalls. "I wanted to unite the retro and modern, the arty and the approachable.” Lush and sophisticated strings arrangements by English jazz-fusion musician Ben Barritt feature heavily on the record. Barritt further contributes some stunningly epic electric guitar solos.
‘Apart’ is an album of separation and redefinition, of entering darkness to find the light. It’s about a difficult, yet positive choice made by the artist to set herself ‘apart’ from her culture, country and personal relationships and gain redefining perspective. “I hope this record inspires others to have the courage to let go of destructive patterns or relationships and stand apart - strong and full of self-love.”
The titular track opens with a haunting Hammond organ, harmonic dissonance and a heavy guitar riff, before Bergman’s luscious and emotionally charged vocals take over. In the upbeat single, "Hold Your Heart," the artist uses rhythmic vocal percussion to initiate a quirky, bouncing disco funk. "Only Numbers" is a languorous and dreamlike alternative pop track that takes a critical look at the digital addiction of our times. It illustrates Bergman's penchant for refined vocal techniques and experimental arrangements, in a similar vein to French singer, Camille.
"The Semi-Professional Clown" recalls Bergman's past as a barbershop quartet singer. Completely self-arranged, and instrumented with her own voice, the track asks the question, what does authenticity mean for art?
"Mirror Girl" - Bergman’s "folk fusion extravaganza" took 10 years to develop. Inspired by the complex, yet free-spirited guitar style of Joni Mitchell, as well as more recent folk heroines like Ani di Franco and K.d. Lang, the song combines intimate storytelling with epic, cinematic soundscapes. The outro’s driving beats and moog solo reflect Bergman's love for 1970s jazz-fusion à la Herbie Hancock.

A small country with a wide musical palette: in Estonia there is a wide scope for unusual sounds between the Poles Arvo Pärt and the festivals with mass choirs. Folk, which has the status of pop amongst the youth scene, is currently being completely renovated - and with the quartet Curly Strings, it is being spiced up with a decent pinch of bluegrass. The woman and three men are one of the most surprising facets of the new sounds in the Baltic States.
If you translate "Curly Strings" literally, you end up with ... "curly strings"? Well, the female member Eeva Talsi has a magnificent blonde curly mane to show for it. But the name could also be an indication of the adventurous playing style of the four, be it on the fiddle, guitar, mandolin or bass. Not always straight and without detours, but sometimes a bit entwined, tortuous - or as the Bern German would say: “curly".
In contrast to many other countries, folk music has not fallen to being regarded as an inferior relic of the past, in their homeland in the post-Soviet era. The youth are interested in the heritage that goes back to the time of the Rune songs, and can be spiritually charged. Estonia proudly and creatively deals with its heritage, but does not set up a folk music police to watch over certain musical customs.
And so the audience in Estonia also welcomed the four "curly strings" with open arms: in 2014 Fiddlerin Eeva Talsi, bassist Taavet Niller, Jaan Jaago on guitar and Villu Talsi on mandolin debuted in the spotlight of the public with the "Ille Ilma" and were soon taken seriously even in the pop scene. Their trademark: the quartet combines Estonian folk tones and lyrics in the resonant native language with the aesthetics of American string bands, creating an unprecedented folk and bluegrass sound that spans across continents. Characterized for their stylistic informality: The Curly Strings have won numerous Folk Awards as well as the European Bluegrass Award. The leading British world music magazine Songlines wrote: "They can hold their own with so many American bands, and have merged the sound from the South with their ethnic style, which not only appeals to the senses of the Baltics.”
So there is every chance that the quartet, charged with youthful verve, will soon be able to celebrate its international breakthrough. For this they have their second brand new long player on deck, which bears the title "Hoolima" and has already won the most important folk award in Estonia. The album was produced by Grammy-nominated Casey Driessen and his colleague Dani Castelar, who has already worked with the likes of Michael Jackson and R.E.M. According to the band, the topics on this second album are those that are "close to our hearts". And how much passion and heart has gone into these songs, can be felt in every beat of the ten songs.
Pushing on and at the same time light-hearted loftiness, with the typical bluegrass offbeats, is presented in the birthday serenade "Aastapäev", culminating in a fast-virtuoso finale. In the swinging "Miks Sa Murrad Mind", carried by delicate mandolin riffs, Eeva sings in a sensitive voice about how one suffers from imprisonment, how one’s freedom of development is taken away. A flight around the world and into the light, is described by the four in the anthemic "Avarus" with its fast-rising violins and bluesy Intermezzi, while "Kuu" ("Moon") deals in melancholy minor moods with being the on-the-road. And finally, the title track: a compellingly optimistic folk-pop song about a positive mind set heading into the future - it combines Nordic flair with a country-esque atmosphere and a funky moment.

Das Canzoniere Del Lazio war eine der wichtigsten italienischen Popmusikgruppen der 1970er Jahre. Die Gruppe ist vor allem für die Erforschung des Folkloreerbes der Region Latium, dann des italienischen Erbes und dann des gesamten Mittelmeers bekannt.
Die ausdrucksstarken Kanons, Rhythmen und Stimmen sind typisch für Volksmusik, aber der Geist des Jazz liegt in den Liedern. Improvisation nimmt ihren Platz ein: Neben Geige und Akkordeon erscheinen E-Gitarren und Saxophone.
Das Mastering für SACD wurde von Giulio Cesare Ricci mit dem komplett analogen und Röhrensystem Signoricci realisiert.
