Laura Marti Pop Jazz / Smooth Jazz
Format: CD

Grand Ensemble Koa Jazz Rock / Fusion
Format: CD
Driven by the pulsation of the "Beat Generation" intellectual and literary movement, the French jazz ensemble Grand Ensemble Koa follows Jack Kérouac’s, Allen Ginsberg’s and William Burroughs’ steps and set the contrarian poets’ texts to music, interpreted by the luminous voice of Caroline Sentis. « I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix... » Allen Ginsberg, Howl, 1956 The "Beat Generation" is a literary and intellectual movement popularized throughout the 1950s, which tried to cast off the "American Way of Life", to get freedom of thought, of dream, of living life to the full. On the Road by Jack Kerouac, Howl by Allen Ginsberg and Naked Lunch by William Burroughs are ones of the main works describing this way of life, the base of activism which shaped the second part of the 20th century... Crossing modern jazz and progressive rock, the third album of Grand Ensemble Koa, "BEAT", gets inspiration from important Beat Generation poets’ texts and sets them to music, carried of by the voice of Caroline Sentis and compositions of bassist Alfred Vilayleck. Grand Ensemble Koa is a large ensemble of 8 musicians playing an electric and innovating jazz, mixing improvisations, contemporary composition's techniques, sophisticated grooves and electro-rock sounds. The band was created in 2008 by the bass player and composer Alfred Vilayleck. In 2010, Grand Ensemble Koa worked on a creation inspired by Alfred Jarry’s Ubu-Roi, made of contemporary compositions, satirical theatre and soundpainting. The album "Koa-Roi" was released in 2012, and received the "Jazz album revelation" by the French magazine "Jazzman". Focusyear Band Modern Jazz
Format: CD
The Focusyear Band 21 presents itself extremely international: The singer Tatjana Nova grew up in Moscow and came to Dresden at the age of 19. Besides the saxophonists Joshua Schofield (England) and Gianni Gagliardi (Spain), Yakiv Tsvietinskyi from the Ukraine and Sebastián Greschuk from Argentina play trumpet and flugelhorn as well as valve trombone. Pianist Lorenzo Vitolo is from Naples, he studied in Groningen and qualified for the Frauenfeld Generations Unit in 2018. Bassist Ethan Cohn is from New Yorke who graduated from Montreal - and Áron Tálas from Hungary he is as well a drummer and pianist. Each year, the ensemble is reassembled from a large number of international applications. Focusyear Band 21 has very quickly found its own sound and is characterized by a high level of sound awareness and a willingness to take risks and improvise. After many intensive weeks with prominent coaches, the eight young musicians now present a selection of their own compositions that were created during the year. On BOSQUE we hear a finely differentiated, homogeneous ensemble with great soloists. The example of the young Italian pianist Lorenzo Vitolo, whose far-reaching improvisations and masterful compositions foreshadow a great career, makes it clear which musical values are attracted and deepened by Focusyear: Interactivity, sonic awareness, compositional originality, music-making at eye level beyond hierarchies or ideologies, and a conscious, pleasurable use of the language of jazz.

Broken Land
Initiative H Modern Jazz
Format: CD
After two critically acclaimed albums, DEUS EX MACHINA and DARK WAVE, the French Bigband Initiative H is releasing a third opus; BROKEN LAND, modeled on Grieg's "Peer Gynt Suite" or Moussorgsky's "Pictures of an Exhibition". The origin of this album is tied to a climatological study. In this, it is assumed that we have reached the "climatic point of no return" since 3rd August 2017. BROKEN LAND embodies the sound and visual soundtrack of this dark assessment; a sombre and imposing, but also fragile and intimate piece of music that allows the listener to glide into an imaginary road movie. Far from fatalism, this album also creates a consciousness that conveys hope; to fight and not give up. BROKEN LAND provides a new impetus - strong, sensitive and bright all at the same time. Founded in 2012 by David Haudrechy, Initiative H took the ambitious challenge to create a dense, modern and passionate music transcending the genres jazz, rock, electro and 20th century music. The powerful sound of this 21st century orchestra is fed by the energy of a big collective project where each musician has its certain place. The interpretation is masterly, the engagement absolute and the listener will be completely absorbed by the telling power of this music. A musical adventure, human, urban, which makes Initiative H an unavoidable entity of the renovation of the French jazz scene. Considering his passion for surfing, snowboarding and skating, the genre crossover in saxophonist David Haudrechyʼs music is more than understandable. The thrill, the shiver, the risk, all sensations are also part of the iconic picture of „Dark Wave“, under the direction and composition of David Haudrechy. He developed his own, liberate, musical language as much inspired by Berlioz and Moussorgski as by Gill Evans, Carla Bley, but also King Crimson and Arvo Pärt. Unexpected and paradox like in a slalom is the musical process between the different projects surrounding the band. Line-Up: David Haudrechy - soprano saxophone, composer, direction, voice, additional sound Ferdinand Doumerc - alto saxophone, flute Gaël Pautric - baritone saxophone, bass clarinet Nicolas Gardel - trumpet Cyril Latour - trumpet Olivier Sabatier - trombone, additional sound Lionel Segui - bass trombone Amaury Faye - piano, rhodes Olivier Cussac - synthesizer Florent Hortal – guitar Pascal Celma - electric bass Pierre Pollet - drums Florent « Pepino » Tisseyre - percussions feat. Danzon Cubano (Live at Viersen)
Marialy Pacheco Trio & WDR Funkhausorchester Mainstream Jazz
Format: CD
It's a bit like when aspiration and entertainment merge; a metaphorical marriage between serious music and music of entertainment - but which is which? "Danzón Cubano" is a blend of Marialy Pacheco on the grand piano along with her fellow musicians Juan Camilo Villa on bass and Rodrigo Villalón on the drums and as “special guest” Joo Kraus on the one hand, and the WDR Funkhausorchester, conducted by Gordon Hamilton, on the other. With this combination, Marialy Pacheco playfully and expertly climbs new musical heights; reaches a new world; a new mix; a dance of sound between Cuban and classical music. In doing so, the fiery solo pianist and polyphonic orchestra play together and allow completely new experiences to be felt with each piece, rather than alternating between one another. Above all, they are playing for the big audience. Melodies glisten, waves of harmonies explode; and suddenly all of our senses are awoken. This is what happened in 2017 at the International Jazz Festival in Viersen. Before the concert, one may have been wondering: is the trio of the Cuban pianist Marialy Pacheco really going to play with the WDR Funkhausorchester at a jazz festival?! How is that going to work and how will that sound? All of these questions were answered directly at the start of the concert. With Baby Steps First, composed by conductor Gordon Hamilton and inspired by John Coltrane's jazz classic Giant Steps, the orchestra kicks off with a jazzy prelude and spreads its wings into different music genres: the perfect introduction. And then she comes: Marialy Pacheco. She brings music from her Cuban roots, from Central America and her own compositions which she arranged for the orchestra together with Hamilton. Her traditional melodies immediately hit the spot with the audience, along with variations, improvisations and a mesmerising interplay with her trio partners, Juan Camilo Villa and Rodrigo Villalón, who put even the most subtle of musical signals from their band leader into action. All in all: music with mainstream potential but without the risk of ever becoming a bore. The rich sound and hot rhythm are enough to make seating at concerts seem absurd. "Danzón Cubano" becomes an experience; not just for the concert pros but also for the unbiased listener. This is a magnificent album full of energy which you can easily keep up with and in which brilliance is maintained in every single beat. LINE-UP: Marialy Pacheco – Piano Juan Camilo Villa – Bass Rodrigo Villalón – Drums Feat. Joo Kraus – Trumpet Gordon Hamilton – Conductor WDR Funkhausorchester

Duets
Marialy Pacheco Latin Jazz
Format: CD
Marialy Pacheco meets Hamilton de Holanda, Joo Kraus, Rhani Krija, Max Mutzke, Omar Sosa and Miguel Zenon; six established figures from across the globe, each master of his own craft. With such a wealth of expertise and musicality on hand, a performance featuring all of these artists at the same time would inevitably mean that some aspects would be lost. So instead we have chosen to feature a series of separate ‘rendezvous’. And the Cuban pianist extracts the very best out of each individual encounter. The title of the CD, ‘Duets’, sums up this concept succinctly and although this may sound rather matter-of-fact, more lies behind it - much more. Chucho Valdes, the grand old man of Cuban jazz, once described the pianist as the greatest of young piano talents. At the time, she had just won a young musicians competition in Cuba, where Valdes headed up the jury. Pachecos’ mother conducts a choir which is famous both in Cuba and further afield. When the choir took part in the Bremen ‘Choir Olympics’ in 2004, Marialy was there and she decided to remain in the city, home of the ‘Stadtmusikanten’ (the town musicians which feature in the famous fairy tale written by the Brothers Grimm). After an extended stay in Australia, the pianist returned to Germany. Initially back to Bremen but she now lives in Dortmund. In 2012, Pacheco won the renowned Montreux Solo Piano Competition. When Marialy Pacheco performs one can truly sense her virtuosity, flair and sheer joy of making music without constraints, set free after her strict classical training. The six fellow musicians who Marialy Pacheco invited to join her in duet at the renowned Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg could be similarly described. Musical citizens from around the world: a Puerto-Rican who lives in New York (Miguel Zenon), a Cuban whose home is in Barcelona (Omar Sosa), a Moroccan from Cologne (Rhani Krija), a Brazilian conqueror of the music world (Hamilton De Holanda), a trumpet player from Ulm, who recorded one of his albums in Havana (Joo Kraus) and a native of Waldshut-Tiengen, who is known throughout Europe not just for his participation in the Eurovision Song Contest (Max Mutzke). Musicians who are not stylistically blinkered, but who are passionate, individual and authentic and endowed with the virtues which are the basic prerequisites for performing as part of a duo: the ability to listen, to engage fully with their counterpart and to leave their ego at the studio door. [...] In DUETS, Marialy Pacheco practices the most intimate, direct and intensive form of musical exchange and in doing so, throws the door wide open.

Emma
Paul Jarret Vocal Jazz
Format: CD
The Franco-Swedish guitarist Paul Jarret’s project EMMA is inspired by the wave of Swedish immigration to the United States who happened during the second half of the 19th century. A theme that resonates with many of our contemporary issues. With his quartet, he creates a chamber-jazz that blurs the lines between improvised, minimalistic and repetitive musics, traditional Swedish music and liturgical musics. EMMA is also inspired by songs evoking exiles and Scandinavian melodies. After being the ground of the Native Americans nations since the dawn of time, the United States of America started building themselves from the 17th century by welcoming the first explorers, then the successive waves of settlers. England, Ireland, Italy... A couple of European countries are known for their contribution to colonizing the United States. Sweden was one of them with the massive exodus of the population between 1840 and 1920. Fleeing from the starvation that was happening at that time, but also the economical difficulties caused by the Great Famine from 1867 to 1869, the yoke of the Lutheran church in Sweden, around 1,3 billion Swedes (a fifth of the population) left their country to join the New World. That’s how they participated, as well as many other European migrants, to the foundation of the United States of America. Emma Jonasson, great-grandmother of the guitarist Paul Jarret, has emigrated to the USA in 1898. She stayed in New-York several years before leaving for Sweden again where she started a family in 1910. She is the main inspiration of the project EMMA. It is also inspired by different documents as The Emigrants (Utvandrarna) by Vilhelm Moberg, a Swedish classical literature that tells the story of a peasant family’s exile. EMMA is a musical evocation of this Swedish exodus to the United States, unrecognized in France. But it’s also a consideration on the consequences of one’s choices have on their own life and on the future generations, and a metaphorical expression of the contemporary issues.

Pangea Ultima Latin Jazz
Format: CD
Our ancestors were already making music with drums and the sound of their voices when they came to Europe from Africa. The oldest instrument known to this day is a 9000-year-old flute found in China made of the bones of a vulture. Since the beginnings of humankind we have expressed ourselves through music and storytelling: our happiness and sorrows, our fears and hopes. Let this be one contribution more, a further journey through space and time. Best served while cooking, driving and making love.” José Díaz de León ESPACIOS ABIERTOS (Spanish: Open Spaces”) is the first concept album of the quintet Pangea Ultima. The Origin” and the Future of Humankind” are like a golden thread that runs through the entire album. Besides the well-known titles Solar by Miles Davis, Alfonsina y el mar by Mercedes Sosa and Spain by Chick Corea the album consists of compositions by the bandleader José Díaz de León. Here he expresses his own bicultural, German-Mexican identity und brings together in his songs authentic African grooves, Western harmonics, Indian sound aesthetics und Latin-American temperament; he collected this extensive material on his musical journeys in Africa, India und Latin America. The musicians include outstanding instrumentalists of the Cologne World & Jazz Scene: the flautist Daniel Manrique-Smith (leader of the band JIN JIM, Neuklang NCD4112), the bass player Roman Fuchß, the drummer Antonio Fusco and the percussionist Christian Fehre. They come from various styles of music (World, Latin, jazz, funk) which they have developed into their own band sound, combining rhythms and sound aesthetics from all over the world. Pangea Ultima ... is the brand-new project of the composer and bandleader José Díaz de León. The name of the project refers to the supercontinent that will possibly come into existence in several million years. In this, all the present-day continents will merge into a single entity and all territorial boundaries will be overcome. If in this distant future humankind should still exist, the music of Pangea Ultima would be the soundtrack for it. Line-Up: León, José Díaz de – guitar/tres cubano, vocals Manrique-Smith, Daniel – C-, Alto- & bassflute, vocals Fuchß, Roman – bass Fusco, Antonio – drums Fehre, Christian – percussion
