The vibration of the silence in the aquamarine inspired the guitarist Friedemann Witecka to name his third solo album - an apt image. Because as if the precious stone in the play of lights were always shining differently, the moods of the eleven instrumental pieces are constantly changing. It is a pleasant contrast between voluptuous atmosphere, slightly floating tones and tight, but never overstimulated rhythms. Friedemann, who lived, taught and played music in England for a decade, has also found recognition as a recording aesthete - at least since the album Indian Summer. An art that he audibly refined on this recording. The soprano saxophone has that typical, slightly whiny tone, the bass clarinet or double bass are allowed to naturally challenge the woofers, the entire percussion arsenal is reproduced extremely vividly, each soloist in the seven-piece aquamarine orchestra can be located with the utmost precision. And because the pieces don't get lost somewhere in the New Age instrumental cloud cuckoo land, the sound journey between folk, jazz and romanticism never gets boring.

Friedemann has been on stage since 1966. Not all the time, of course, because over the years he has also developed a profile as a music producer, publisher and composer. The world traveller, who was born in Freiburg im Breisgau, now spends more time in the subdued atmosphere of his recording studio than in the spotlight. Eight exquisite albums have been released since 1987 - but only one of them was a live recording, a concert recording from the Aquamarine tour of 1990. Experts were surprised: 'The hard-working sound tinkerer provides the most impressive proof to date that the new instrumental music can also be used for a thrilling live -can become an experience... A delight, even for spoiled ears,' wrote Zounds magazine.
Friedemann is now building on this success with The Concert. Many of the fans, who often traveled several hundred kilometers to experience a concert evening with Friedemann and his German-French ensemble, have been eagerly awaiting this.
Meanwhile, other things are even more important to the uncompromising perfectionist Friedemann than all media possibilities: His band has now matured well and grown together. And the live show has excitement and depth.
Of course, the program - recorded in the Stuttgart Theaterhaus - contains Friedemann's very own, subtle instrumental music, which combines the best of folk, jazz and pop with a touch of chamber music. Music is played intensively and improvised in the best jazz style.
The very precise and concentrated performance of the ensemble always offers space for all kinds of gags and nonsense, and the cheerfulness that permeates the entire evening gives the concert experience a pleasant relaxed atmosphere.

For half a century his life has been his music. And on this long and wondrous way the German composer and guitar player Friedemann has come across some deep rivers and some high mountains. Or as he himself puts it: »The music has made me poor and rich, happy and unhappy. It makes me ill and it heals me. It frustrates me, frightens me and gives me hope. Sometimes I hate it. But, it lives within me; it nourishes me and it inspires me to new deeds.«
Now, you may say, this compilation is not really a new work. Are you sure?
For a long while Friedemann has contemplated compiling a collection of the most vibrant recordings, as a sort of retrospective, and, at the same time creating a new dramaturgy, a new listening experience. Consequently, he asked his long-time friend and tonmeister, Johannes Wohlleben, to completely rework the entire program with the finest studio equipment and with all his extraordinary skill, instead of just copying the tracks of the old productions.
So, all the music you hear on this disc has been completely remastered and offers a new listening sensation. Friedemann: »That is why I call it ›The Master Tracks‹ «.
