Wie in den frühen 50er Jahren üblich, stammt die LP Recital by Oscar Peterson nicht von einer einzige Sitzung, sondern aus einer Auswahl aus verschiedene Terminen mit ähnlichen, aber nicht immer gleichen Musikern, aus dem Zeitraum von 1952 bis 1954. Zwei relativ kurzlebige Trios sind vertreten, mit Ray Brown bei vier Stücken am Bass und Barney Kessel an der Gitarre.Das sind die lyrischsten Ausschnitte dieses Albums.
Kessel nimmt eine herausragende Stellung im beschwingten Pompton Turnpike ein, während der Einfluss des Nat King Cole Trios auf Peterson in Cherokee offensichtlich wird. Das Blues-getränkte Willow Weep For Me mit Irving Ashby (er wer war für kurze Zeit der Gitarrist im Trio, bevor Barney Kessel dazu kam). Auf der B-Seite, ist Herb Ellis an der Gitarre, und Schlagzeuger Louis Bellson kommt dazu, mit dem jetzt erweiterten Quartett klingt es ein bisschen extrovertierter (vor allem auf Singin' In The Rain). Der Zusatz von Ellis scheint Peterson zu größeren Höhen zu stimulieren. Die Quartettseite ist interessant, da es nicht so üblich war Peterson in dieser Besetzung zu hören.
