On Pursuit Of Radical Rhapsody, the guitar virtuoso and pioneer of world music, together with his ensemble World Sinfonia, devotes himself more to the atmospheric and overwhelming sounds. Auf eine Karriere wie im Bilderbuch kann Al Di Meola zurückblicken. Der Student des renommierten Berklee College Of Music war noch nicht einmal 20 Jahre alt, als ihn 1974 Chick Corea in seine erfolgreiche Fusion-Truppe Return To Forever holte. Zwischen 1980 und 1983 wurde der Mann aus New Jersey Partner von John McLaughlin und Paco DeLucia in einem Gitarren-Trio, welches mit "Friday Night In San Francisco" eine der bestverkauftesten Jazz-Scheiben aller Zeiten auf den Markt brachte. Seitdem schlagen zwei Seelen in der Brust des Ausnahme-Musikers: Die des in akustische Klängen verliebten Gitarristen und die des auf elektrische Sounds spezialisierten Virtuosen.
Auf Winter Nights frönt Al Di Meola der - mit Ausnahme einiger Keyboardtupfer - den unverstärkten Tönen. Das Ergebnis ist freilich nicht weniger elektrisierend und zeigt den Gitarristen von seiner romantischsten Seite. Im Verein mit Hernan Romero(akustische Gitarre und Percussion), sowie dem aus der Ukraine stammenden Bandura-Spieler Roman Hrynkiv spielt er sogar Weihnachtslieder wie Carol Of The Bells, The First Noel oder Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. Daneben gibt es Standards aus dem klassischen (Ave Maria) und jazzigen Bereich (Greensleeves), eigene Komposition und eine wunderschöne Variante des Simon&Garfunkel-Hits ScarbouroughFair. Das schönste dabei: Kitschige Momente bleiben außen vor. Aber das hat bei Al Di Meola ohnehin niemand anders erwartet.
