Bei der Studiosession des Tenorsaxophonisten John Coltrane am 15.September 1957 in Hackensack, New Jersey, entstand das gesamte Material für das legendäre Album "Blue Train". Das Album war das erste Mal, dass Coltrane die Möglichkeit bekam, seine Begleitmusiker für einen Termin selbst auszuwählen. Er holte sich die Unterstützung des Trompeters Lee Morgan, des Posaunisten Curtis Fuller, des Pianisten Kenny Drew, des Bassisten Paul Chambers und des Schlagzeugers Philly Joe Jones. Als Coltrane 1960 in einem Radiointerview gefragt wurde, welches von allen Alben, die er bis dahin aufgenommen hatte, sein Lieblingsalbum war, antwortete er schnell: "Blue Train".
